The best things in life are free. Love is free. Kissing is free. Kindness is free. Reading is free. Listening to music is free. Strolling in the park is free. Jogging is free. Swimming is free. Singing is free. Admiring the October sun is free. Thinking is free. Hugging your kid is free. Being polite is free. Discussing with your best friend is free.

Big Beautiful Bucharest is the Town of Lovers.

In September, in Big Beautiful Bucharest sun rises at 7 o’clock sharp. Not so early, I think. So, it is a perfect time to wake up my daughter and search for the sun in the park.

We were lucky enough to experience a wonderful time in the Alexandru Ioan Cuza park (former IOR park) yesterday. She was impressed by the colors of the sunrise. I was moved by the people. There was so many people wandering, running, strolling, walking with their dogs, riding their bikes or simply admiring the sun.

On Dictatorship and Democracy

Dictatorship is a bad thing. Democracy is a good thing. Not absolutely, but relatively to dictatorship. In other words, when comparing dictatorship to democracy we must admit that democracy is a better option. I do not intend to contest this fact. Especially, because I experienced both democracy and dictatorship in Romania.

But, pay attention to this. In both situations we have to deal with power and controlling people. The control is brutal and primitive and crude in an authoritarian political regime. The control over people is incredible sophisticated in a democratic regime.

When confronting with a primitive control, humans tend to appreciate their freedom. They think they must fight for their freedom. They can detect very clearly what freedom means and what oppression means. When confronting with a sophisticated form of control, humans are so disoriented. They do not understand the value of their freedom. Their attention is misguided. They do not think about freedom. They do not want to live a free life. They only think about having staff, buying things, working hard and promoting. They forget that their freedom is important. The idea of freedom is polluted with the idea of prosperity.

Think about a clear water. Imagine that you want to prevent people from drinking clear water. You can have two strategies: 1. to stop the clear water (primitive and hard to achieve) or 2. to mix the pure water with dirt (sophisticated).

In democracy, those who want to control the masses (and this is the gist of power) are using a very sophisticated strategy. Free people are difficult to control. So, they promote the idea of freedom (clear water), but they mix it with other ingredients, like the idea of having more. But to have more means to work more. And that is not enough. You have to borrow more money. And to work harder and harder. To be the best. To achieve your dreams. But in the process, the idea of importance of your freedom is paling.

There is plenty of water. But there is no more clear water. There is so much work to be done, so many things to buy, so many positions to secure. But there is no more free spirit.

Expressing my gratitude

Once upon a time there was a chic cinema in Bucharest city, called Miorița (The Little Sheep). And when the big bad Mall wolf came into town, The Little Sheep was about to became an extinct cinema.

Thanks to Europa Cinemas, The Little Sheep is still alive. The atmosphere in this cinema is closest to my idea of a nice place to watch a good movie. I return here systematically, in order to enjoy this atmosphere (today I have just watched an excellent movie, The Priest’s Children, a Croatian movie, directed by Vinko Brešan).

So, I decided to write this article as a way to express my humble gratitude to this chain of cinemas, dedicated to support good European movies.

George Orwell – 1984 – O’Brien and the intelligence to survive in the worst possible situation


Some books are supposed to be read more than once. Multiple reading is like the wine. When drinking a glass of good wine or when reading a book for the second-third time you can better detect new colors and shades and complex ideas.

Almost invariably, when I get a good book I cannot help myself not to read it again (and again). In most cases the second-third reading is happening after two or three years after the initial one. Looked at from this new standpoint, the book reveals new details, new interesting aspects. Needless to say, a second-third reading always is more rewarding than the first one. Obviously, the second-third reading is a genuine proof that you are holding a valuable book in your hand. It means that the book has much more to offer you than you can get from one reading. That was the case with the George Orwell’s 1984.

I read George Orwell’s 1984 three times. And this time my attention was drawn to O’Brien. For a variety of reasons, this character is as important as Winston for expressing the author’s ideas on a political system which intends final and total control of human life. O’Brien is an intelligent person. He is even more intelligent than Winston. And Winston respects him for this. O’Brien is “a person who could be talk to”. And Winston desperately wants to have a conversation with him. He needs this dialogue in order to feel himself a person, an individual. And this is because it is vital for an individual to have contact with other people. Especially when you feel that you have something in common with such persons, and when you are deeply confident that there is always something valuable in talking to a person more intelligent than yourself.

O’Brien is intelligent. In spite of this, he is a lunatic. He is a survival expert. Living in a world in which freedom is impossible, in which living as an individual is impossible, in which thinking on your own is impossible, O’Brien simply understands that there are only two possible solutions: to revolt against the system (that is to commit suicide) or to be a lunatic. He succeeds in surviving in the worst possible situation. For O’Brien, the survival expert, to be lunatic means to imagine that you can live a normal life, not to give up your pride, to search for love and friendship, to believe in truth and reality. For O’Brien it is insane to think that 2 + 2 = 4 when the political system decided that 2 + 2 = 5. Living in an illogical world, it is illogical to think that something is illogical, this is how O’Brien thinks. For an intelligent person as O’Brien, the only logical thing is to search for power and to give up everything else.

O’Brien understands that freedom is impossible. And he uses all his intellectual powers to gain something in return for losing his freedom and individuality. He chooses power instead. I believe this is one of the most interesting parts of Orwell’s book (I come to this conclusion only now, when I am reading this novel for the third time). It is the paragraph about the relation between power and the dissolution of our identity and individuality.

It is time for you to gather some idea of what power means. The first thing you must realize is that power is collective. The individual only has power in so far as he ceases to be an individual. Alone – free – the human being is always defeated.

At the end of the day, we can only take pity on O’Brien for choosing power.
